June 2008 ACCESS Advantage

Every Day is Earth Day!

While "Earth Day" officially falls in the month of April, every day can be Earth Day through conscious event programming. ACCESS  Destination Services and our industry as a whole are well positioned to honor our planet and to reinforce the beauty of nature through offering green events, theme decor, engaging entertainment, specially selected speakers and other creative eco-program components.

In a previous issue of "The ACCESS  Advantage," we touched on eco-friendly team building events. In addition to these action-oriented single events that involve recycling and creating environmental awareness, incorporating a "green" common thread throughout your entire meeting, conference or incentive travel program takes your green goals to the next level.

The ACCESS  Orange County office recently designed and produced a welcome reception at the Anaheim Convention Center in celebration of planet Earth. Entrance components included eco-friendly carpeting in a natural hue and planter boxes brimming with produce and vegetation simulating an ecologically friendly garden. "Green Patches" situated throughout the event were interactive areas where guests learned interesting, humorous and often mind-boggling facts about our Earth. A stunning replica of planet Earth, suspended over a four-sided central bar, was quite the conversation piece but the hit of the evening was interactive eco-themed entertainment; walking "Grapevines", "Trees", "Trash Cans" and "Globe." Talking "sprouting" buffet heads are also a fun way to engage guests with recycling facts.

For themed events we are seeing more nature-reinforcing trends such as natural color schemes including items such as burlap linens, centerpieces comprised of natural or recycled components like bamboo, twigs, stones and moss, all supporting an eco-friendly environment. Events designed in various shades of green also serve as a reminder to "go green." Additional event components in support of green events include recycling stations, video loops showcasing recycling tips, event signage on recycled paper, energy efficient lighting packages and "poured" water rather than bottled. When inviting guests to your special events, consider invitations or promotional items designed with seed paper that can be later planted and transformed into blooming flowers.

For a dynamic green speaker, Marge Anderson is Associate Director of the Energy Center of Wisconsin and is responsible for over $2M in annual budgets for programs that improve the energy, environment and human performance of commercial and residential buildings. She has a strong background in effective adult learning methodology, serves on the International Board of Directors for MPI, is Chair of the Convention Industry Council's Task Force on Sustainability and Responsibility, and was recognized with MPI's prestigious Global Paragon Award. With her extensive knowledge and savvy wit, Marge is in great demand as a speaker on green meetings.

Whether you are looking for eco-friendly transportation options for your VIPs, threads of environmental narrative woven into a youth tour, an off-site at an environmentally conscious venue, a cruise on a yacht that uses a blend of domestically-produced, environmentally friendly bio-diesel fuel or a nature-inspired final night gala, contact the creative destination management team at ACCESS  Destination Services for your next Southern California meeting, conference or incentive travel program. In the meantime, we are constantly on the lookout for innovative "green" ideas and we encourage our vendors to do so as well.
