Keri Shaffer – Shining Star for ACCESS Destination Services!
While Los Angeles is home to stars of the celebrity type, movie studios, and the Academy Awards, Keri Shaffer of the Los Angeles ACCESS team is our own “Shining Star.” Keri was recently honored as Shining Star of the Month by the MPI (Meeting Professionals International) Southern California Chapter for her many contributions to the local chapter. States Monica Smith, CMP, CASE and MPISCC Director of Awards & Recognition, “The key to a successful organization is having the people who are dedicated in serving others with their talent and their time…MPISCC depends solely on its member volunteers to manage all activities and position us for continued growth. In recent months, Keri Shaffer has served the MPISCC by working as a volunteer on the MPISCC Fundraiser. Her dedication and hard work as a committee member has directly contributed to the success of our organization.”
Keri, a two year sales veteran at ACCESS , where she manages incentive, corporate and association accounts, enjoys offering creative suggestions to create dynamic programs of events for her clients while showcasing all that ACCESS and the Greater Los Angeles area have to offer clients looking for a hospitable Southern California destination for their upcoming programs. Prior to her employment at ACCESS Destination Services, Keri served as Program Manager for an East Coast Destination Management Company and as a Regional Meeting Planner/Program Manager for one of our long-standing East Coast client companies where she managed promotional symposia for over seven pharmaceutical drugs in various therapeutic classes, among other responsibilities. Ultimately, the warm, sunny climate of Los Angeles drew Keri westward and to the ACCESS Los Angeles team.
In her free time, Keri enjoys baking and listening to live music. In fact, it was her love of gathering friends together at creative parties to sample good foods, wines and music that drew Keri to the Hospitality Industry. Her love of the above, her networking abilities, and her interest in various aspects of volunteerism, contribute to her value to MPI where she has served on the local chapter’s Fundraising Committee for the past two years, this past year as Chairperson. Keri’s associate at the ACCESS Los Angeles Office, Steve McCleave, DMCP, serves as Director of the Chapter’s Fundraising efforts, highlighting that industry involvement and participation is encouraged by the leadership team at ACCESS and by partner, Ilene Reinhart, DMCP, CMP, who heads up the Los Angeles ACCESS Office.
Keri aspires to achieve her DMCP and CMP designations and will continue her volunteer efforts with MPISCC which strengthens her commitment and enhances her experiences serving her clients at ACCESS Destination Services. Says ACCESS partner, Ilene Reinhart, DMCP, CMP, “Keri is a wonderful example of volunteers who follow-through on their promises. Many times, people will say they will do the work but then they are nowhere to be found. Keri stands by her word and gives more than 100% towards the success of everything she does, both with her clients and with her volunteer activities.”
Prior to being named as Shining Star of the Month, Keri was previously honored by the MPI Southern California Chapter as Rising Star of the Month in recognition for individuals who have made significant contributions to the chapter and show promise as future leaders. Keri, your star shines bright!

Los Angeles
Hit the Beach! Cruisin’ the coastline from Malibu to San Pedro, the Los Angeles ACCESS team offers up a variety of new program components to provide just the right balance within an exciting area conference, incentive or convention agenda. Tempered with “old favorites”, new offerings often address the “been there, done that” element and help to keep a well planned itinerary filled with fresh ideas.
In the Malibu area, we are happy to announce the re-opening of the Getty Villa following renovations. This educational center and museum makes for a great tour activity as it is dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. The Getty Villa, modeled after a first-century Roman country house, contains the J. Paul Getty Museum’s collection of approximately 44,000 Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities. Over 1200 works are on view in 23 galleries, all arranged by theme, comprising the permanent collection. Additional galleries feature changing exhibitions themed to the arts and cultures of antiquities. Also of note are the architectural components of the Villa, featuring modern design in harmony with its original style. Gardens are also as integral to the setting of the Getty Villa as they were in the ancient Roman home. Also in Malibu, a new facility offers adult fencing classes. Check in with the ACCESS Los Angeles team for more information on this potential team-building event.
Marina Del Rey now offers a new ferry service, The Marina Flyer, to whisk your guests off in style on a day trip to Catalina. Popular Catalina excursions feature Casino tours, botanical tours, glass bottom boat tours and more.
In Hermosa Beach, Gallery C, formerly the Art Deco-era Metropolitan Theatre, proudly displays a renowned collection of contemporary California art and features over 6,500 square feet of special event space with moveable glass walls, bamboo and polished cement floors, art deco moldings, sculptural wall relief, and a private VIP lounge among other special features.
Next, discover Zazou, a restaurant in Redondo Beach, able to accommodate a private group of up to 100 guests in event space featuring a private sun-drenched balcony and seaside artwork. Zazou’s “cuisine of the sun” infuses eclectic Californian with Mediterranean flair.
Palos Verdes Peninsula is home to the Trump National Golf Club, just 30 minutes south of downtown Los Angeles. With its ocean views, the Club, which is open to the public, features an 18-hole course (noted as the most expensive golf course ever built), meandering nature trails, 3 restaurants, and an impressive ballroom that seats 300. Keep in touch with the ACCESS Los Angeles team for updates on a new resort being built on the Palos Verdes Peninsula – the luxury, seaside Terranea Resort, which will reside on 102 acres on the former site of Marineland.
Cruisin’ along, into San Pedro, we find Fort MacArthur, historically a U.S. Army post which guarded the Los Angeles harbor from 1914 to 1974. Now, it is available as a venue for group events and offers classic beauty and charm, mature gardens, flowering palms and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Step back in history with the talented team of the ACCESS Los Angeles office.

Orange County
The Shriners are Coming! When the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau asked ACCESS Destination Services to come up with some creative activity suggestions to help positively showcase the Anaheim area to the Shriners organization for their 2007 Imperial Council, the ACCESS Orange County team rose to the challenge. ACCESS Program Manager, Robbie Glowczwski, hopped a jet plane and headed off to Tampa, the site of the ’06 Imperial Council to view activity and transportation logistics and patterns for this 20,000 person convention first-hand.
The Shriners of North America will hold its 133rd Annual International Convention, the Imperial Council Session, in Anaheim this July. The public can show their support by viewing the Shriners Parade on Tuesday, July 3rd, at 1:00pm in Anaheim. Featured in the parade are equestrian components, motor corp, and clowns from 190 visiting Shrine Temples! It will be the first time Anaheim will have been the location for this annual meeting and in partnership with the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, we are committed to portraying sunny Anaheim as a kaleidoscope of exciting things to do and see for the Shriners and their families who will be occupying 12 area hotels over the July 4th timeframe.
No fewer than 21 tours and activities are being offered to attendees including “Surf City – Huntington Beach”, “Lights! Camera! LA”, a “Laguna Beach Shuttle”, “Antiques and old Classics”, “Florals and Fauna” and many more. Additionally, ACCESS will support the Anaheim VCB by coordinating select VIP activities during the convention. Summer in the city will indeed be an exciting and busy time for ACCESS Orange County, Anaheim and the surrounding areas.
Shriners of North America is the 411,000-member fraternity that founded and continues to operate 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The hospitals provide specialized medical treatment at no charge to children with orthopedic problems, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. ACCESS Destination Services is proud to be a partner in planning for the 133rd Imperial Council Session and we look forward to putting our 35+ years of creativity, hospitality services, and logistical skills to work this summer on this exciting project.
Whether you have 20,000 attendees or a more intimate-sized gathering of VIPs, contact the Orange County Office of ACCESS Destination Services for your next special event.
Spice it up with ACCESS
California Chili Rellano with Espanola Sauce! This spicy regional favorite is courtesy of “Cafe Coyote”, located in San Diego’s Old Town.
Serves 4-6
12 Anaheim (California) peppers
36 ounces Monterey Jack cheese (cut into 12-3”x1” block pieces)
½ cup flour plus extra
2 medium green bell peppers, chopped
3 small onions, chopped
6 small tomatoes, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, chopped
½ cup vegetable oil
3 cloves garlic
½ teaspoon white pepper
3 tablespoons chicken bouillon
1 tablespoon oregano
8-10 eggs
5 pounds canola oil
Prepare peppers: Roast pepper in open flame or in pan on stovetop, using no oil. Place in warm water and then on warm towel. Peel off skin. Slice peppers on the side and remove seeds and veins. Put 1 block of cheese inside each pepper (all the way to the top, where the stem is.) Close pepper and squeeze tightly to ensure that cheese does not slip out the bottom of the chili. Sprinkle with flour. Refrigerate.
Prepare sauce: Combine bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and jalapeno pepper. Set aside. Warm vegetable oil in sauté pan. Place chopped vegetables in pan. When vegetables become tender, add garlic, pepper, bouillon, and oregano. Cover and simmer on low flame for 5 minutes. Set aside.
Coat peppers: Crack eggs in a medium-sized bowl. Separate egg yolks from white without breaking yolks. Whip egg whites until stiff. Add ½ cup flour and mix gently. Set aside. Stir egg yolks just enough to break the yolks. Add to egg whites and gently mix together to reach consistent soft yellow color and fluffy texture.
Fry rellanos: Heat 2” of canola oil (temperature should read 350-400 degrees). Dip refrigerated chili peppers into egg fluff. Coat evenly and place gently in hot oil. Fry until puffy and golden brown. Blot on paper towels and serve immediately with Espanola Sauce.
Enjoy!
