client Fortune 100 integrated oil and gas company

challenge To engage the corporation's IT department in a sustainable and socially responsible teambuilding project involving computers and children to take place in hurricane-devastated New Orleans - 2,000 miles away from our California base of operations - with only 45 days notice!

solution After researching several potential beneficiaries, a New Orleans Foundation was selected whose mission includes providing technology education to all people with equal opportunity for learning and personal growth. They provide at-risk youth with computer/internet access, training and employment connections. On-site, kids and their corporate mentors assembled office furniture and 15 computers; created inspirational artwork; and beautified this safe-study environment for kids needing computers for homework. Team activity rotations and mentoring sessions focused on non-competitive quality results and communication. Youth engaged mentors in career and leadership discussions and the mentors became future contacts for these students. Students then were positioned to become mentors and tutors to other at-risk youth - a lasting legacy!

outcome A vacant house became a Computer Lab through team activities while youth received mentoring and enhanced their abilities to transfer their skills and knowledge to others. The IT team became better group problem-solvers and workplace troubleshooters. This event was a success in every way. States our client, "with little more information than the date, number of participants, and the desire to incorporate computers and children into a socially responsible teambuilding event with our IT team, to give back to the local community, you came through."
